This 1994 Ford Probe is about as far removed from its factory configuration as possible. Purpose-built for serious drag racing, this Probe combines an unmistakable red Ford body with a full Meanis Chassis double-rail setup and a 427ci small-block Ford producing approximately 685 horsepower. From the massive Goodyear rear slicks and wheelie bars to the rear parachute and forward-facing hood scoop, virtually every aspect of the car has been built around getting down the strip.
Power comes from a 427ci small-block Ford based around a World Products Man O’ War block. Internally, the engine features:
- Eagle crankshaft and rods
- Diamond pistons
- Ported Victor Jr. cylinder heads with raised intake ports
- 850 CFM Demon carburetor
The engine is set up to run on 113-octane racing fuel, resulting in an estimated 685 horsepower in a lightweight, dedicated race chassis. Backing the 427 is a TH400 automatic transmission equipped with:
- 5,000-rpm stall converter
- Trans brake
- Reverse-pattern valve body
Power is sent to a Ford 9-inch rear end with 4.10 gearing. The rear of the car is equipped with wide Goodyear Eagle drag slicks, while narrow front runners help complete the traditional drag-racing setup. A substantial set of wheelie bars extends from the rear of the chassis, accompanied by a parachute system for shutdown at the end of a pass.
The factory interior has been completely gutted and replaced by a purpose-built racing environment. Extensive aluminum paneling surrounds the driver, while the full tube chassis and roll cage dominate the cabin. Features include:
- Kirkey racing seat with G-Force harnesses
- Race steering wheel
- Large tachometer
- Auxiliary gauges
- Switchgear and dedicated racing controls
The car is also equipped with a Biondo Mega 450 delay box and associated race electronics. Lexan windows further reduce weight and reinforce the car’s competition-focused construction. Up front, the removable-style race bodywork provides access to the 427 and its large fabricated headers, cooling system, and supporting hardware. The oversized hood scoop feeds the carbureted Ford V8 while giving the Probe an unmistakably aggressive profile.
Underneath, the extent of the fabrication becomes even more apparent, with the double-rail tube chassis running the length of the car and very little remaining from the Probe’s original production-car underpinnings. This is a dedicated drag car rather than a street-oriented build, offering a distinctive alternative to the Mustangs, Camaros, and other conventional platforms typically found at the strip.
With approximately 685 horsepower, a stout TH400, Ford 9-inch rear, full race chassis, parachute, wheelie bars, slicks, and properly outfitted cockpit, this Probe is built with one purpose in mind.
